•  Getting
By Air from Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
Fly into Kuala Terengganu (TGG) airport. Choose either Malaysia Airlines or Air Asia. Get into an airport taxi and head SOUTH to MARANG jetty. Journey should take about 35 minutes from airport to jetty.

By Road
From the West coast, the Karak highway or the Karak-Kuantan Highway are the 2 main highways. At the end of the Karak-kuantan Highway, a choice of 2 routes can lead to MARANG jetty

The 1st route is via Bukit Besi and Jerangau. One passes by oil palm plantations and fruit orchards on this route. This is a faster route to Marang Jetty.

The 2nd route is along the coastal highway via the various scenic coastal towns such as Cherating, Dungun and Rantau Abang, Sea views can be seen along the way with plenty of opportunities to enjoy local food, atmosphere and friendly locals. End your drive at Marang Jetty.

Duration of journey from Kuala Lumpur could be approximately 4 1/2 to 5 hours. Do have a road map handy at all times.

On Arrival at Marang Jetty
There are many boat services to Gem Isle at the Jetty. The most frequent and regular service provider is Suria Link. Just a mere 15 minutes and you will have a breathtaking view of Gen and kapas islands with crystal clear waters all the way.

Kapas Beach Chalet

One of the most charming places on the island, great owners and great atmosphere. Sometimes open in the monsoon.

Rooms are very basic but all have own shower.

Accommodation

The resorts are temporarily CLOSED due to the Monsoon Season. We will re-open at the beginning of March 2012!

The resorts on Kapas Island are mostly spread out over three beaches on the western shore, facing the mainland. Accommodation here ranges from dorm rooms to moderately priced air-conditioned chalets. More luxurious accommodation is available on Gemia Island, a small islet just a few hundred meters northwest of Kapas.

On the beach which has the main boat jetty for the island as well as the hybrid power station, is where you will find Kapas Island Resort, Duta Puri Resort and the Lighthouse. The beach just to the north of it is home to Kapas Beach Chalet, Makcik Gemuk and Kapas Coral Garden. Qimi Chalet is on the northernmost beach while Kapas Turtle Valley occupies a small beach cove on the southern tip of the island.

Getting there

Kapas Island is 5 km from the east coast of peninsular Malaysia in the state of Terengganu. Boats to the island depart from Marang jetty which is a 30 minute drive south of Kuala Terengganu.

Boats to Kapas Island

Boat tickets can be bought at the jetty in Marang or per-arranged with your resort and included in your package. There are regular transfers throughout the day and according to demand. Return trips cost around RM 25 and take 15 minutes by speedboat. Slower, cheaper boats are also available but take 30 minutes.

Getting to Marang

Marang is south of Kuala Terengganu and is not to be confused with Merang which is north of Kuala Terengganu and the departure point for boats to Redang and Lang Tengah Islands.

By plane

The closest airport is in Kuala Terengganu, about 30 minutes away.

Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines fly daily to Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur.

From the airport you can get a local bus or a taxi (around RM 15-20) to Marang.

By road – public transport

There aren’t any direct coach services to Marang, but buses approaching Kuala Terengganu from the south can drop you off here on request. There are also local buses and taxis from Kuala Terengganu to Marang.

From Singapore buses depart from the Lavender St bus station and are operated by Transnational. Tickets cost around SGD 40 and the journey takes around 10 hours. Buses depart early in the morning or late evening for overnight journeys. There are other coach & travel companies operating out of Golden Mile Complex at Beach Road (e.g. Five Stars, Enjoy Holiday Tours, Konsortium and Gunung Raya etc.) that provide holiday packages and coach services to Kuala Terengganu. These buses are more luxurious, but are also significantly more expensive. Ask to be dropped off at Marang.

From Johor Bahru buses depart from the Larkin bus station. Several choices are available, including Transnational, Damai, Adik Beradik and Cepat express. Tickets cost around RM 40 and the journey takes just under 9 hours. Buses depart early in the morning or late evening for overnight journeys. Ask to be dropped off at Marang.

From Kuala Lumpur buses depart from the Hentian Putra bus station. Several choices are available, including Transnational, Damai, Konsortium, Plusliner, Sutera and Mutiara. Tickets cost around RM 30 and the journey takes around 7 hours. Buses depart early in the morning or late evening for overnight journeys. Ask to be dropped off at Marang.

From Penang buses depart from Komtar or Butterworth bus stations and are operated by SP Bumi or Atieza. Tickets cost around RM 35 and the journey takes around 9 hours. Buses depart late in the evening for overnight journeys. From Kuala Terengganu you will have to take a taxi or local bus to Marang.

From other major cities and towns in Malaysia, there are also several bus companies that operate services to Kuala Terengganu. For updated information and schedules, enquirer directly at the long distance bus station. 

By road – self drive

From Kuala Lumpur take the east bound highway (East Coast Expressway) in the direction of Kuantan. From Kuantan, take the coastal road (highway 3) north, in the direction of Kuala Terengganu (follow signs along the way). Marang is about 30-45 minutes after Dungun on highway 3.

From Singapore / Johor Bahru Cross the border at Woodlands or the Second Link and from Johor Bahru take the Plus highway north. Exit at Yong Peng. Follow highway 1 to Labis and Segamat, highway 12 to Kuantan, then use coastal highway 3 via Kemaman, Paka and Dungun towards Kuala Terngganu. Marang is about 30-45 minutes after Dungun on highway 3.

From Penang take the East-West highway 4 towards Kota Bharu via Grik and Jertih. From Kota Bahru, proceed south on highway 3 to Kuala Terengganu. Continue south on highway 3 after Kuala Terengganu till you reach Marang.

The Lighthouse

Experience the holiday means so simple but satisfying

Backpacker-style accommodation with all rooms housed in one big house on the beach. There is a beach bar and a very relaxed atmosphere. Tall trees provide shade as well as a place to tie hammocks. There is a volleyball net, a lone sea kayak and some lounge chairs on the sand. Located at the edge of the beach with soft sand on the one side and a rocky ledge on the other. Dorm rooms share bathrooms outside the rooms while the other budget rooms have attached bathrooms.

Captain's Longhouse, or The Lighthouse, offers 7 rooms and a dorm room at its beachfront location. Each room is equipped with fan, and a mosquito-netted bed fit for 3 persons. The dorm room is airy and clean, with mosquito-netted mattresses to accommodate 20 persons.

For a more relaxed, almost nonchalant, forget the world and forgo security-type of accommodation, another option is the open verandah. Just beds, fans, mats and lush greenery.

Rooms and dorm rooms are splashed with vivid colors and accents. The owner, Captain Shariff, is a friendly and warm guy, treating his guests like family.

Alike other resorts around the area, Captain's Longhouse provides facilities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and tent rental. On request, fishing and scuba diving tours can be arranged. A jungle trekking guide to the blue lagoon and a round island tour are also available.

How to get to Lighthouse Beach Resort

By Car: Travel south from Perth on the Kwinana Freeway towards Mandurah, and continue on the Old Coast Road to Bunbury. On reaching the first roundabout in Bunbury, turn on to Koombana Drive (going past the Dolphin Discovery Centre). Koombana Drive becomes Clifton Street (cinemas on the left).Turn right on Victoria St, then left on Carey St, up to the hotel. Guests can find us by looking for the big Lighthouse itself situated on top of the hill. You head straight towards it and you cannot go wrong. Located atop Marslton Hill, The Lighthouse Beach Resort can be accessed from either Carey Street or Ocean Drive.
